Light brown viscous liquid, light straw yellow soft solid at 20℃. Soluble in alcohol solvents, insoluble in water. By octadecylamine, formaldehyde, formic acid obtained by condensation. First add octadecylamine into the reactor, stir evenly in ethanol medium, control the temperature at 50-60 °C, add formic acid, stir for several minutes, add formaldehyde at 60-65 °C, heat up to 80-83 °C, reflux for 2 hours , neutralize with liquid caustic soda to make the pH value greater than 10, stand for stratification, remove water, remove ethanol by vacuum distillation, and then cool to obtain N,N-dimethyloctadecylamine.

Application

This product is an important organic synthesis intermediate of quaternary ammonium salt type cationic surfactant. It can react with ethylene oxide, dimethyl sulfate, diethyl sulfate, methyl chloride, benzyl chloride, etc. to generate different quaternary ammonium salt cations, which can be used for fabric softening, antistatic agent, improving hair combability and other products. It can also be used to produce insect repellents. N,N-Dimethyloctadecylamine reacts with ethylene oxide and nitric acid to obtain octadecyldimethylhydroxyethyl quaternary ammonium nitrate, which is an antistatic agent
