Hyperkalemia can be fatal if left untreated. 3. Another medical use of sodium bicarbonate is to deal with overdose of aspirin or tricyclic antidepressants. Aspirin is best absorbed in an acidic environment, so this compound can be used to lower the acidity and reduce the amount of aspirin absorbed into the blood. 4. This compound is also sometimes given intravenously during emergency CPR procedures. 5. Sodium bicarbonate topical can relieve the symptoms of insect bites.
